Saudi Arabia Enhances Digital Services for Makkah Route Pilgrims via Tawakkalna App
Pilgrims to Access Electronic Hajj Permits Through National 'Super App'
Riyadh: Saudi Arabia is upgrading its digital services by leveraging the national "super app" Tawakkalna, which now enables participants of the Makkah Route Initiative to display and access their Hajj permits electronically before departing from their home countries.
This development reflects the country's ongoing efforts to integrate technology into the pilgrimage experience, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Kingdom to simplify the Hajj journey through interconnected digital platforms facilitated by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA).
The SDAIA has developed the technical backbone supporting the Makkah Route Initiative, linking various government entities within a unified framework designed to expedite procedures and improve the verification of personal and biometric data.
The Tawakkalna app allows pilgrims to view Hajj permits and associated travel documents electronically from the outset of their journey.
This functionality is expected to make the pilgrimage process more seamless, from departure through arrival in Makkah.
The application, which has gained significant traction with over 35 million users and more than one million daily active users, serves as a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's digital transformation agenda under Vision 2030.
The Makkah Route Initiative is overseen by the Ministry of Interior, offering pilgrims from selected countries the convenience of completing immigration, customs, and health procedures at airports in their home nations prior to arrival in Saudi Arabia for Hajj.
This initiative exemplifies how digital solutions can streamline complex processes, enhancing the overall travel experience.
Tawakkalna has become an essential platform, offering more than 1,300 services in collaboration with over 350 government and private sector entities.
Its role as a unified digital gateway for citizens, residents, and visitors is critical to Saudi Arabia's efforts to modernize public services and make them accessible worldwide in multiple languages.
The app recently received the Best Arab Smart Government App award at the Arab Government Excellence Awards, highlighting its contributions to improving government services and user experience.
Moreover, Tawakkalna continues to integrate advanced AI technologies to improve connectivity between government systems and enhance service efficiency.
In a significant milestone, during the Google Cloud Saudi Summit in Riyadh in November 2025, executives from Tawakkalna described the app as an AI-powered national ‘super app’ that supports millions of users with robust digital infrastructure and integrated services.
The platform's multilingual capability is particularly beneficial for international visitors, including pilgrims traveling for Hajj and Umrah, facilitating a more inclusive and accessible public service experience.
