Spain's Civil Guard reports a fatal accident during an anti-drug operation in the Atlantic, resulting in two officer fatalities.
Madrid, Spain — On Friday, the Spanish Civil Guard reported a tragic incident where two of its officers lost their lives following a collision between their boats while engaged in a pursuit of suspected drug traffickers in the Atlantic Ocean.
The region's proximity to Morocco, known for its significant role as a cannabis producer, positions Spain at the forefront of anti-narcotic missions, often involving high-risk operations that frequently culminate in fatal accidents.The incident occurred off the coast of Huelva, a southern province in Spain.
According to the Civil Guard, the accident resulted in two fatalities — one officer was killed instantly, while the second succumbed to injuries later.
Additionally, two other officers sustained injuries, with one being seriously injured and the other suffering minor injuries.In response to this tragic event, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his condolences through an official statement, acknowledging the shock and distress caused by the incident.
The Civil Guard's main union, AUGC, also issued a statement asserting that the accident was directly linked to the ongoing risks associated with their anti-drug operations.
