Qatar's CPI Rises 2.62% Y-O-Y in April, Led by Food and Clothing

Qatar's Consumer Price Index reached 110.61 points in April, with an annual increase of 2.62 percent, led by gains in the food and clothing sectors.
Riyadh - Qatar's Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 110.61 points in April, marking a monthly decline of 0.74 percent but a notable annual rise of 2.62 percent according to data released by the National Planning Council.

This index tracks inflation across the economy and includes 12 major commodity groups encompassing 737 goods and services, with 2018 serving as the base year for calculations.The annual inflation rate of 2.62 percent in Qatar places it slightly above its Gulf neighbors during the same period.

For instance, Saudi Arabia recorded a lower inflation rate of 1.7 percent in April, while Oman experienced more pronounced price increases, with an annual inflation rate of 3.6 percent as of March.According to data from the National Planning Council, several groups contributed to the monthly decline in the CPI.

These include entertainment and culture, which decreased by 6.19 percent; transport, down by 0.88 percent; clothing and footwear, reduced by 0.61 percent; other goods and services, down by 0.18 percent; and health group, down by 0.1 percent.

Conversely, food and beverages posted the largest monthly gain at 1.48 percent, while housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels rose by 0.13 percent, furniture and household appliances increased by 0.12 percent, and restaurants and hotels edged up by 0.07 percent.

Notably, tobacco, communications, and education groups experienced no change month-on-month.On an annual basis, eight commodity groups registered price increases.

The most significant gains were observed in the miscellaneous goods and services sector, which surged by 13.82 percent, followed by food and beverages at 10.41 percent.

Clothing and footwear also rose by 4.71 percent year on year, while education increased by 2.09 percent, housing utilities by 1.62 percent, restaurants and hotels by 0.90 percent, furniture and household appliances by 0.81 percent, and communications by 0.75 percent.In contrast, the data highlighted declines in three groups: entertainment and culture decreased by 3.18 percent; the transport group fell by 0.55 percent; and the health group declined by 0.09 percent.

No change was recorded for the tobacco group.Excluding the housing, water, electricity, gas, and fuels group to focus on underlying consumer price trends, the index stood at 115.39 points in April, down 0.92 percent from March but up 2.84 percent year over year.
