The US Africa Command carried out additional airstrikes against Daesh targets in northeastern Nigeria, killing more than 20 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants.
The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced on Monday that it conducted follow-up airstrikes against Daesh targets in northeastern Nigeria the previous day.
The strikes were carried out in coordination with the Nigerian government as part of ongoing joint operations targeting militant groups in the region.Nigeria’s Defense Headquarters confirmed that the latest airstrikes took place in the Metele area of Borno State, an area known for its high concentration of fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter group of Boko Haram.
According to AFRICOM, more than 20 ISWAP militants were killed during these operations.No US or Nigerian personnel were injured in this operation, highlighting the effectiveness and precision of the strikes.
The action follows a joint US-Nigerian mission carried out on Sunday, which resulted in the death of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, identified by both governments as the second-in-command of Daesh globally.US President
Donald Trump praised Nigeria's cooperation during this operation, acknowledging it as a significant setback for the militant group.
Similarly, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended the successful joint operation, emphasizing its impact on weakening Daesh’s leadership and disrupting its operational capabilities.The Nigerian military underlined that these operations are part of ongoing efforts to disrupt insurgent networks, remove fighters from conflict zones, and deny them safe haven.
Borno State has been at the epicenter of a 17-year insurgency led by Boko Haram and ISWAP, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacing approximately 2 million people.
