India's Only 'Uncontacted' Tribe Faces Threat from Encroaching World

Anthropologist Anstice Justin argues that limited contact missions may be necessary to protect the Sentinelese tribe from outside influences.
SRI VIJAYA PURAM: One of the last authorized visitors to India's only 'uncontacted' tribe suggests it may be time to reconnect with the isolated people — in order to shield them from an encroaching world.

Anthropologist Anstice Justin, 71, participated in government-sponsored contact missions to North Sentinel Island in the Andaman Sea between 1986 and 2004.

The island's inhabitants are notoriously resistant to engaging with outsiders, having even killed a US missionary who made an unauthorized visit in 2018.

What little is known about the Sentinelese comes from these limited government interactions.

However, even these encounters have not yielded significant insights into their culture and identity.

'We don't even know how they identify themselves,' Justin stated on Andaman Island, just two hours away from North Sentinel by boat.

Justin described his first visit in 1986, where he brought coconuts as a sign of goodwill.

The group saw smoke rising from the rainforest and soon encountered the Sentinelese.

Despite their reputation for hostility, Justin reported no signs of aggression during these visits.

Observations suggest they use narrow outrigger canoes, reside in communal huts, carry spears and bows, and wear fiber waistbelts, necklaces, and headbands.

The government's current policy is one of 'eyes on, hands off' — distant observation rather than direct interaction.

However, Justin believes this approach may not be enough as the modern world increasingly encroaches upon their territory.

Contact with other islanders in the past has had devastating effects, including population declines due to disease.

The Sentinelese have made it clear they do not want any contact.

Andaman police chief HGS Dhaliwal stated that efforts are being made to protect the island from outside intrusions, though the challenges posed by social media-seekers and would-be celebrities like Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov highlight the difficulties in maintaining this isolation.

In 2025, Polyakov was arrested for entering the protected zone with a coconut and a can of Diet Coke, aiming to create YouTube content.

Justin argues that even limited contact could benefit the Sentinelese by alerting them to potential threats.

'In the long run, self-contained people may not be able to survive in this competitive world,' he said.

The anthropologist suggests that regulated meetings with outsiders could provide warnings about those attempting to disturb them.
