Police in Northern Ireland Declare Security Alert After Car Bomb Explosion
A security alert has been declared in the town of Dunmurry, on the outskirts of Belfast, after a car bomb exploded near a police station.
LONDON: Police in Northern Ireland have declared a security alert in the town of Dunmurry, situated on the outskirts of Belfast, following reports that a car bomb exploded near a police station.
Homes in the vicinity were evacuated, and the public was advised to avoid the area, according to the Police Service of Northern Ireland on Sunday. The explosion occurred late at night, causing distress among residents and politicians alike.
Sorcha Eastwood, a member of the UK Parliament representing the Langan Valley, expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the potential danger posed by the car bomb in an area filled with residential housing, small businesses, and civilians out socializing or working. No information has been released regarding the motive behind the attack.
However, police have linked this incident to dissident Republican groups that continue to oppose the Good Friday Accords and seek to provoke fear and disrupt peace.
These groups have carried out sporadic attacks in recent years. In a separate incident last month, authorities foiled another attempted bombing on a PSNI station in Lurgan.
Two masked men stopped a delivery driver, placed an improvised bomb in his car trunk, and forced him at gunpoint to drive it towards the police station.
The device was subsequently detonated by the police after evacuating approximately 100 homes.Although the 1998 Good Friday Accords largely ended decades of violence between Republican groups opposed to British rule and those supporting Northern Ireland's ties with the UK, dissident groups continue to engage in sporadic acts of terrorism to maintain relevance.
