Over 43 Million Trees and Shrubs Planted in Saudi Arabia Since SGI Inception
Saudi Arabia has planted over 43 million trees and shrubs and revitalized 94,000 hectares of land since launching the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) in 2021.
This effort covers an area about the size of 146,000 football fields throughout the kingdom.
At the Saudi Green Initiative Forum held during COP28, Saudi officials and experts discussed strides towards their 10 billion tree goal. Dr. Khaled Al-Abdulqadir, head of the National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification, showcased their use of advanced technology and AI for strategic tree planting, particularly in difficult landscapes.
Additionally, the initiative has garnered significant public participation, with 150,000 volunteers contributing, including children and families.
Inger Andersen, UNEP executive director, praised Saudi Arabia at the forum for bringing desertification concerns to the G7 and recognized the kingdom's commitment to combating desertification. She noted Saudi Arabia's readiness to host UNCCD COP16 in 2024, highlighting its active role in tackling environmental challenges.
