National Center of Meteorology Launches Updated Weather Forecasting and Early Warning System in Saudi Arabia
RIYADH — The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has launched an updated mechanism for forecasting and issuing early warnings for various weather phenomena.
The new system includes a color-coded warning system with three phases: yellow, orange, and red.
These warnings will be issued between 6-12 hours or more before the expected impact of the weather phenomenon, based on specific criteria for each color.
The updated mechanism will cover all types of weather phenomena that may affect the Kingdom's atmosphere, such as light to medium and heavy rains, dust storms, fog, strong winds, high waves, cold waves, heat waves, light to moderate snowfall, and severe snowstorms.
The launch of the updated mechanism was presided over by Eng.
Abdul Rahman Al-Fadhli, the Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of NCM, in Riyadh, last month.
The ceremony was attended by officials concerned with crisis management.
The updated mechanism incorporates the latest practices, technologies, and outputs that provide comprehensive services to all beneficiaries, aiming to achieve an integrated work to save lives and property, and increase the educational and awareness role for all members of society regarding weather phenomena, and ways to deal with them before, during, and after their occurrence.
