Ukraine Alleges Russia's Involvement in Firing on Surrendering Soldiers
Ukraine is investigating claims that Russian troops executed surrendering Ukrainian soldiers, actions which, if proven, would constitute a severe war crime under international law.
A social media video, reported as authentic by Ukrainian authorities, depicts uniformed individuals being shot at close range, apparently by Russian soldiers. The Russian government has not commented on the footage.
Furthermore, Kyiv has accused Moscow of ongoing humanitarian law violations since the February 2022 invasion, which the Kremlin denies. Amidst the conflict's second winter, Ukrainian soldiers' families in Kyiv are demanding better treatment for troops, including set-service terms and the release of prisoners of war.
President Zelenskyy notes that prisoner swaps have decreased, leaving thousands still captive. After a prolonged battle, Russia captured Mariupol in May, with Ukrainian defenders finally surrendering at the Azovstal steel plant.
Recent Russian shelling in the Kherson region resulted in casualties and damage to civilian buildings. Power outages have also struck nearly 1,000 locations across Ukraine due to both inclement weather and combat activities. The Institute for the Study of War observes that harsh weather conditions have slowed military operations across Ukraine's frontlines.
