London Police Investigate Stabbings of Two Jewish Men as ‘Terrorist Incident’
British authorities are investigating a stabbing incident in north London as a 'terrorist incident' following a series of anti-Semitic attacks.
In London, two Jewish men were injured in separate stabbing incidents on Wednesday.
The Metropolitan Police stated that these events have been treated as 'terrorist incidents.' This announcement follows a recent wave of antisemitic attacks across the city.
King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer both condemned the assaults, which took place in Golders Green, an area known for its significant Jewish population.
A 45-year-old man, born in Somalia and a British national, was apprehended on suspicion of attempted murder.
The suspect also attempted to attack police officers during his arrest.
Initially taken to the hospital due to his condition, he was later discharged after being detained.
Both victims, aged 76 and 34, remain in stable condition at the hospital.
The assailant is believed to have been involved in another incident earlier on Wednesday morning in southeast London where one person sustained minor injuries.
Met commissioner Mark Rowley noted that the suspect has a history of serious violence and mental health issues.
A small group protested during his briefing, shouting 'Shame on You.'
According to SITE Intelligence Group, an Iranian-linked organization claimed responsibility for the stabbings through a video, attributing the act to one of their 'lone wolves,' believed to be part of Harakat Ashab Al-Yamin Al-Islamiya (HAYI), also known as The Islamic Movement of the People of the Right Hand.
Local resident Moshie expressed shock over the incident and commented on the increasing violence in the area, reflecting a growing sense of fear among the community.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened an emergency meeting to address these events, emphasizing swift justice and increased security measures.
King Charles III expressed deep concern over the attacks, which come amid a series of arson incidents targeting synagogues and other Jewish sites in recent weeks.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry criticized the UK government's response, stating that the escalation of antisemitic acts suggests a lack of control over these situations.
The incident unfolded with initial reports from the Shomrim Jewish neighborhood watch group around 11:00 am (1000 GMT) when they encountered a knife-wielding individual attempting to attack Jews in public.
The Shomrim members assisted in detaining the suspect before the police arrived and used an electroshock weapon for restraint.
Both victims were treated at the scene by Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer ambulance service.
This incident follows the October 2022 stabbing at a Manchester synagogue during Yom Kippur, which resulted in two deaths and injuries to three others.
Community leaders such as Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis emphasized the need for 'zero tolerance' against these types of attacks, underlining the community's resilience despite the struggles posed by living with fear.
Since the beginning of the US-Israeli conflict on February 28th, police have arrested 28 individuals in relation to various attacks.
The group HAYI has been responsible for many of these incidents, including a series of similar events across Europe.
Monitoring groups have noted an uptick in antisemitic and Islamophobic occurrences in Britain since the start of the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza.
