UK Ex-Minister Burt Admits Change of Heart Over Israel’s Killing of Palestinian Nurse
Former UK Middle East Minister Alistair Burt now accuses Israeli government of murdering Razan Al-Najjar, a young Palestinian nurse killed in 2018.
A former Conservative minister in the UK has admitted to a change of heart regarding the killing of a prominent young Palestinian nurse, accused the Israeli government of murder, and criticized previous UK reactions.
According to The Independent, Alistair Burt, who previously served as Middle East Minister under Theresa May, now admits that the UK was wrong not to 'call out' Israel following the death of Razan Al-Najjar in 2018.
Al-Najjar, dubbed the ‘Angel of Mercy,’ was shot dead by Israeli forces while attempting to aid a wounded demonstrator on Gaza’s border with Israel.
The incident drew international condemnation.
At the time of her death, Burt urged the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to investigate the death but did not criticize Israel himself.
A UN probe later found 'reasonable grounds' suggesting that Al-Najjar was deliberately targeted by Israeli security forces, despite posing no threat.
In his new stance, Burt criticizes the UK's reliance on Israeli denials and promises of investigation into the killing, describing them as 'useless' and a cover for the Israeli government.
He now regrets his previous reaction to Al-Najjar’s death and admits that the young nurse was ‘clearly targeted and murdered by the Israelis.'
Burt's change of heart is detailed in a new book titled "Complicit, Britain’s Role In The Destruction of Gaza" by journalist Peter Oborne.
This shift reflects a broader evolution in Western attitudes toward Israel following the conflict in Gaza.
The IDF initially cleared itself of wrongdoing in Al-Najjar’s death but was accused of conducting a smear campaign against her after releasing manipulated footage.
Before her death, Al-Najjar had become an icon among Palestinians, with thousands attending her funeral.
