U.S. Embassy in Riyadh Commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day with First-Ever Memorial Event
The American diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a historic observance in Riyadh
On January 27, diplomats and guests gathered at the United States Embassy in Riyadh to observe International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the first known formal commemoration of the occasion at the U.S. diplomatic mission in the Saudi capital.
The event honoured the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust and reaffirmed a shared commitment to remembering the systematic extermination of six million Jews and millions of others during World War II, in line with the United Nations’ designation of the day.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day falls on January 27 each year to coincide with the 1945 liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
Participants at the embassy reflected on the importance of education and remembrance to help prevent future atrocities and promote human dignity.
The ceremony in Riyadh took place against the backdrop of evolving cultural and diplomatic engagement in the region, where other Arab cities have increasingly hosted Holocaust remembrance events in recent years.
