Saudi Women's Growing Role in Sports: A Step Forward

Saudi Women's Growing Role in Sports: A Step Forward

Saudi Arabia sees rising female participation in sports as part of broader social changes under Vision 2030.
In Saudi Arabia, a push to expand the role of women in sports has been marked by several significant developments.

Since 2017, physical education has been introduced in girls' public schools for the first time, marking an important step towards gender equality in education and beyond.

The following year, the kingdom made history by opening stadiums previously restricted to men to both women and families, a move that reflects the broader shift outlined in Vision 2030.

This vision aims to diversify Saudi Arabia's economy away from oil through various sectors including sports.

This inclusive approach is visible in events such as the Riyadh Marathon, where female participation has risen significantly.

According to data provided by the Saudi Sports for All Federation, it went up from 18.7% in the 2022 edition to 25.8% in 2026.

Shaima Al-Husseini, managing director of the federation, highlighted that this rise is part of a carefully crafted strategy aimed at creating safe spaces and opportunities for women to engage with sports.

Majd Al-Otaibi's journey into football illustrates this progress well.

She started playing overseas but had to stop upon returning to Saudi Arabia before physical education was introduced in her school.

Today, she credits the changing landscape and supportive environment for her continued passion for the sport.

Her story exemplifies the generational shift where opportunities that were once limited are now expanding.

The commitment to women's sports is further evidenced by statistics showing over 70,000 girls participating in school leagues, supported by a growing workforce of more than 1,000 coaches.

Success stories like Al-Husseini and Sawsan Al-Hindi, who has risen through the ranks of padel—a sport akin to paddle tennis—demonstrate the impact of structured competition and supportive environments on women's sports development.

Al-Hindi's journey from an initial recreational activity to competitive success underscores the importance of access to tournaments and expert coaching.

Her story reflects how dedicated efforts in developing facilities, organizing competitions, and providing mentorship can empower women in sports.

The future looks promising for Saudi women in sports as they continue to make strides both locally and internationally.

Their stories not only reflect personal achievements but also the collective progress towards a more inclusive sporting culture.
