Sierra Leone to Take In Hundreds of West African Migrants Deported by US

Sierra Leone to Take In Hundreds of West African Migrants Deported by US

Sierra Leone has agreed to accept hundreds of West African migrants being deported from the United States, as part of an agreement aimed at accelerating removals under the Trump administration.
FREETOWN: Sierra Leone has consented to receive hundreds of West African migrants who are facing deportation by the United States, according to its foreign minister.

This decision forms a part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to expedite removal processes.

The initial group of so-called third-country deportees is scheduled to arrive in Sierra Leone on May 20th, with this flight carrying 25 nationals from Senegal, Ghana, Guinea, and Nigeria.

According to Timothy Kabba, Sierra Leone's foreign minister, the agreement entails an annual intake of approximately 300 citizens belonging to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The US has previously deported migrants to various countries in Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Eswatini.

This practice has been met with criticism from legal experts and human rights organizations due to concerns over the legal basis for such transfers and the welfare of those returned to nations where they do not hold citizenship.

Sierra Leone's arrangement specifically targets ECOWAS citizens mirrors a similar agreement made by Ghana.

Reports indicate that deportees sent to countries like Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, and others have later been compelled to return to their home countries despite receiving court-ordered protections in the United States meant to prevent such occurrences.

It remains unclear whether those arriving in Sierra Leone will be allowed to remain there permanently.

As of the latest reports, no further details regarding what benefits or considerations Sierra Leone might receive for accepting these deportees have been disclosed.

The Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, El Salvador, Eswatini, and Palau are among the countries that have reportedly received over $32 million directly from the U.S. to assist with removal operations.

The arrangement between the United States and Sierra Leone is not without its precedents.

In 2017, during an earlier tenure of the Trump administration, the U.S. Embassy in Freetown began denying tourist and business visas to officials from Sierra Leone's foreign ministry and immigration services due to the government's reluctance to accept Sierra Leonean nationals subject to deportation.

The legal justifications for these actions by both governments have been a point of contention and debate, with the U.S. maintaining that such deportations are lawful.

The exact terms and implications of this new agreement between Sierra Leone and the United States await further clarification.
