The unrest began on Friday following a meeting between the mayor of Mirontsy and representatives from the fishermen’s association, who have been on strike since Wednesday.
The strike is in direct response to significant increases in fuel prices—diesel has seen a 46% hike, while gasoline has risen by 35%, with these measures being cited as responses to Middle Eastern conflict impacts.
In reaction to these price hikes, various sectors across the archipelago have begun to demonstrate.
Transport workers and shopkeepers, for instance, have effectively paralyzed public transportation in Moroni, the capital of Comoros.
