Saudi Arabia's Date Palm Industry: Key Facts and Global Influence
Environment Minister Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli highlighted the importance of date palms, noting the country has over 200 million trees on 1.5 million hectares, producing 9.7 million tons of dates mainly in the Middle East and North Africa.
Al-Fadhli spoke at the third International Dates Council in Riyadh, with attendees from 40 countries responsible for exporting 1.8 million tons of dates worth $2.3 billion.
He announced the FAO's support for Saudi Arabia's initiative to declare 2027 the International Year of Date Palm to promote the sector's role in sustainable agriculture and food security.
He concluded with a positive outlook on the council's future role and governance.
