Saudi Academics Emphasize Role of Higher Education in Combating Extremism
Academics stress on consolidating national values to combat extremism and protect societies.
RIYADH: Saudi academics have highlighted the significance of utilizing higher education to bolster national values as a means to counteract extremism and safeguard societal well-being.
Dr. Saad Al-Shathri, an adviser to the Royal Court and member of the Council of Senior Scholars, underscored that embedding national values is crucial for protecting societies during a forum organized by Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University in Al-Kharj on Tuesday.
Al-Shathri emphasized that fostering awareness necessitates reinforcing established principles across daily practices and institutions.
Furthermore, Naif Arab University for Security Sciences co-hosted an international symposium with the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization focused on "Publishing and Security".
Participants from this two-day event posited that radical ideologies find traction when individuals' connections to their cultural identity are weakened, including ties to their rich history, authentic social values, cultural heritage, and positive traditions.
Dr. Ayad Al-Shammari, an independent researcher, pointed out Saudi Arabia's approach in confronting extremism through the promotion of moderation, tolerance, and awareness regarding the dangers posed by extremism.
Al-Shammari also stressed the importance of bolstering 'cultural identity' to counteract extreme ideas and hate speech within publishing.
Researchers noted that Saudi Arabia employs long-term strategies to combat extremism and negative speech by reinforcing cultural identity via research initiatives and programs.
The symposium attendees recommended harnessing artificial intelligence positively in the publishing sphere, making it accessible for researchers and research centers to bolster cultural identity.
They also advocated for a comprehensive national strategy on cultural publishing aimed at strengthening cultural identity while integrating various government sectors' traditional, digital, visual, and audio publishing policies to serve the promotion of cultural identity and prevention of extremism.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Muqbil, supervisor of the Intellectual Awareness Unit at Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University, articulated that these meetings demonstrate a deep understanding of current circumstances and a forward-thinking vision for the future.
Al-Muqbil remarked that intellectual security is now considered essential rather than supplementary, serving as a fundamental pillar of comprehensive security.
He highlighted that universities play a pivotal role in shaping individuals and fortifying minds through an integrated system that encompasses education, training, and values development.
Moreover, awareness building is seen as the responsibility of institutions, with the university's Intellectual Awareness Unit implementing programs aimed at reinforcing national values.
Al-Moqbil further noted that universities are instrumental in cultivating and reinforcing minds to protect both the present and future.
On the sidelines of the forum, the University entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Center for Intellectual Property Protection to enhance research and awareness cooperation.
This announcement coincides with the University's implementation of 160 awareness programs benefiting over 10,000 individuals this year.
