Riyadh's Creative Hub Hosts Groundbreaking Monologue Series Blending Music and Storytelling

The 'Unspoken' series, a collaborative effort by Writers in Riyadh, Aurora Theater, and The Warehouse, offers an intimate look at the tensions shaping modern life.
On a Monday evening in Riyadh, a gathering of musicians, writers, actors, and directors took place in the city's creative district, JAX.

The event was the first of a one-of-a-kind monologue series that captivated audiences with its humor, wit, and sincerity.

'Unspoken,' produced by Writers in Riyadh, Aurora Theater, and The Warehouse, featured nine monologues on stage, providing an intimate and unfiltered look at the quiet tensions shaping modern life.

Audience member Khalid Al-Tattan remarked on the event, noting the passion and authenticity each performer brought to their acts.

He found it inspiring to see such a groundbreaking event in Saudi Arabia, celebrating self-expression and artistry in a bold way.

The series, 'Unspoken: Episode 1 -- Permission Not Granted,' featured monologues tackling subjects such as the struggles of motherhood, the grief of aging, the challenges of modern love, and unsaid feelings.

Aurora Theater's Nicole Garbellini, David Ogilvie, and Shruti Parasuraman wrote these pieces, addressing universal themes that resonate across cultures.

The performances included 'It’s Me, Kit,' about a son grappling with his resentment toward his bedridden father; 'It’s a Man’s World,' offering a humorous take on a hopeless romantic's first date experience; and 'Just a Few Questions,' showcasing the seemingly perfect marriage.

Musical interludes blended different art forms, creating a unique stage presence.

Soha Khan, who delivered 'It’s a Man’s World,' highlighted the power of monologues in storytelling, emphasizing their ability to create direct and human connections.

Lubna Ahmed-Haque, founder of Writers in Riyadh, expressed pride in the collaborative effort that brought together creatives from diverse backgrounds, fostering community and creativity.

Aurora Theater has been active for 15 years, with a vision to replicate its community projects internationally, including in Saudi Arabia.

Garbellini emphasized the importance of these events in creating a shared space where stories, music, and fun come together.

Despite tackling difficult subjects often considered taboo, such as miscarriage and mental health issues, the collaborators maintained openness while respecting the performance environment, making 'Unspoken' a significant cultural milestone in Riyadh's creative scene.
