NATO Anticipates US Troop Reductions from European Presence to Take Years

US plans to withdraw troops and weapons from Europe, with a long-term timeline for the process.
BRUSSELS: The United States is set to reduce its troop presence in Europe, but this strategic shift will unfold over several years, according to NATO's top military commander, US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich.

This announcement follows decisions by the Trump administration to withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany and to cancel plans for deploying long-range Tomahawk missiles.European officials expressed surprise at both the timing of the troop reduction announcement and its connection to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's criticism of the US strategy concerning Iran.

General Grynkewich addressed reporters after a NATO military chiefs meeting in Brussels, stating that this decision is expected to be the only one of its kind 'in the near-term' for the alliance.

He affirmed that it will not compromise NATO's defense capabilities.European governments have responded to US calls to increase defense spending and take on more responsibility for the continent's security.

However, concerns persist about potential vulnerabilities if US troops and weapons are withdrawn hastily, leaving Europe exposed to military threats from Russia, despite Moscow's denials of such intentions. The reduction in US troop presence will be synchronized with European forces' growth to fill the strategic gap left behind.

General Grynkewich emphasized that as the 'European pillar' of NATO strengthens, the United States can gradually reduce its European footprint while focusing on providing critical capabilities that European allies currently lack.

He also noted that an exact timeline for these changes cannot be specified, emphasizing that it will be a prolonged process spanning several years. While Europe assumes a more active role in conventional defense, this transition is set to happen alongside continued American support through vital military capabilities such as command and control systems, satellite intelligence and communications, strategic bombers, and the US nuclear deterrent.

NATO relies heavily on these American strengths for its overall defensive posture.
