Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Democrats Urge Biden Administration to Halt Weapons Transfers to Israel Amid Gaza Crisis
Representative Nancy Pelosi, a prominent Democratic leader and former House speaker, signed a letter with other Democrats urging President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to halt weapons transfers to Israel.
The call came amid international criticism of Israel's military assault on Gaza, which has resulted in over 33,000 reported deaths and widespread famine.
Pelosi's support for this stance highlights its growing acceptance within the Democratic Party.
A group of 37 Democratic congressmembers, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, called on the Biden administration to investigate an Israeli airstrike that killed seven staff members of the aid group World Central Kitchen on Monday.
The letter, signed by representatives such as Barbara Lee, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, expressed concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis and the approval of weapons transfers to Israel in light of the incident.
The Israeli military had previously dismissed two officers and formally reprimanded senior commanders after finding serious errors and breaches of procedure in their investigation into the strike.
On Thursday, President Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, expressing concern over civilian casualties during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
According to Israeli estimates, Hamas' October 7 attack resulted in over 1,200 deaths.
In response, Israel launched military actions against Hamas-controlled Gaza, displacing almost its entire population of 2.3 million and facing allegations of genocide, which Israel denies.
The US may alter its policy if Israel fails to take sufficient measures to protect civilians.
