Muslim World League chief calls for unified AI governance framework
Conference in Morocco highlights the need for shared values to guide AI development.
The secretary-general of the Muslim World League, Mohammed Al-Issa, has called for a unified and comprehensive framework governing artificial intelligence (AI).
His remarks were delivered at an international conference titled "The Future of Human Civilization in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" held in Morocco.
Over 2,000 participants from around 75 countries joined the event organized by the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez.In his keynote speech, Al-Issa addressed the significance of AI's role in reshaping human civilization and its potential impact on intellectual transformation.
He traced the evolution from the knowledge revolution of the 16th and 17th centuries to the current era where AI has transformed machines into systems capable of analyzing and generating ideas.
Notably, he acknowledged that the experimental scientific method was pioneered by early Muslim scholars.Al-Issa emphasized the importance of aligning AI development with shared human values to ensure that these technologies serve as a force for good.
He highlighted potential risks, particularly concerning sensitive areas such as religion, race, and culture.
Unregulated AI systems could exacerbate division, hatred, and conflict if used improperly.
Therefore, he stressed the need for establishing clear and transparent standards, ensuring accountability among companies in the field, and imposing strict limitations on high-risk domains where critical decision-making is involved.Al-Issa distinguished between human beings with their capacity to think independently and AI systems which are shaped by the data they receive.
Thus, while humans possess autonomy of thought, AI lacks awareness and independent will.In conclusion, Al-Issa stated that technology ultimately reflects human choices and values embedded in its development parameters.
