Iraq Air Defenses Fire at Drone Over Baghdad's Green Zone
Iraq's air defense systems fire at an unidentified drone flying over the Green Zone in Baghdad, where the US embassy is located.
April 28, 2026: Iraq’s air defense systems fired at a drone flying over Baghdad’s fortified Green Zone on Tuesday.
The Green Zone houses the US embassy and other diplomatic missions, as well as international institutions and government offices.
According to a military source cited by AFP, the air defense of Camp Honor detected an unidentified drone over the Green Zone at 1915 GMT.
Air defense systems were activated towards the target, but the drone was not shot down.
Shrapnel from the attempt to shoot down the drone injured one person.
This incident marks the first such event in Baghdad since a fragile ceasefire between the US and Israel and Iran took effect on April 8.
Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq have targeted US interests, including the embassy in Baghdad and other US-linked facilities, since the beginning of the war.
The US has also struck their positions and bases, resulting in dozens of fatalities.
Earlier on Tuesday, AFP journalists reported hearing what sounded like gunfire and small explosions.
No further details about the type of drone used or any potential consequences of the incident were provided.
