Iran Tells Saudi Arabia U.S. Threats Against Tehran Undermine Regional Stability
Iranian president says American pressure disrupts security as Riyadh and Tehran discuss de-escalation amid rising tensions
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that United States threats against Tehran risk exacerbating instability across the Middle East, according to statements issued by the Iranian presidency.
The comments were made during a telephone conversation on Tuesday as U.S. military forces, including a carrier strike group, redeploy to the region amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Pezeshkian said that what he characterised as U.S. threats and psychological operations were aimed at disrupting regional security and would ‘‘achieve nothing other than instability’’ for the United States and its partners.
He told the Saudi crown prince that Iran welcomed any process, within the framework of international law, that helps prevent war and emphasised the ‘‘unity and cohesion’’ of Muslim countries as essential to ensuring ‘‘lasting security, stability and peace’’ in the region.{{turn0search1}}{{turn0search3}}
The exchange between the two leaders took place against a backdrop of mounting international concern over possible military confrontation after U.S. naval assets, including the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and accompanying vessels, arrived in Middle Eastern waters.
The United States has also announced a multi-day Air Force exercise in the region, which U.S. military officials said would demonstrate the capability to deploy and sustain air power in support of regional security objectives.{{turn0search1}}
Tehran’s government has previously criticised Washington’s actions as interference in its internal affairs and has reaffirmed its readiness to defend its sovereignty.
Iranian officials have insisted that they are prepared to engage in diplomatic processes to avoid conflict, while also warning that any attack on Iranian territory could have broader repercussions across the Middle East.
The call with Saudi Arabia’s crown prince underscored continuing efforts by Riyadh and Tehran to maintain dialogue amid heightened regional tensions and to seek cooperative approaches to security challenges rather than escalation.
