Egypt orders review of pyramid restoration after outcry
After public backlash, Egypt's Antiquities Ministry has announced a review of the restoration efforts on the Menkaure Pyramid in Giza.
The controversy began when a video posted by Mostafa Waziri, head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, showed granite blocks being installed on the pyramid's base, prompting fears of inappropriate reconstruction among Egyptologists.
To address concerns, the ministry is forming a scientific committee, led by the renowned archaeologist Zahi Hawass, with international experts evaluating the project.
Their assessment will guide future actions and coordination with UNESCO. Despite the uproar, reporters noted that work had already started at the site.
The restoration aims to refurbish the pyramid's original granite base, which had deteriorated over time. This incident highlights the sensitive nature of heritage conservation in Egypt, especially following recent outcry over the destruction of parts of historic Cairo.
