At least 42 killed in intercommunal fighting in Chad: government
Fighting between ethnic groups over a water well in eastern Chad leaves dozens dead, as the situation remains under control, according to the Deputy Prime Minister.
NDJAMENA, Chad: At least 42 people were killed in fighting between ethnic groups in the east of Chad, a government official said Sunday.
A government delegate reported that the clashes on Saturday in the sub-prefecture of Guereda in Wadi Fira province originated from a dispute over a water well.
In response to the situation, several ministers, senior local officials, and the military’s chief of staff were dispatched to the scene on Sunday.
The Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Limane Mahamat, assured that the situation is under control.
This conflict marks the latest in a series of disputes between farmers and nomadic Arab herders in eastern Chad, exacerbated by refugees fleeing fighting in neighboring Sudan.
Conflicts over land use have resulted in over 1,000 deaths and 2,000 injuries between 2021 and 2024, according to estimates from the International Crisis Group.
