American Ex-Combatant and Putin Propagandist Russell Bentley Goes Missing in Eastern Ukraine
An American named Russell Bentley is missing in the Russian-controlled Donetsk region of Ukraine.
He went missing on April 8 after reportedly going to help people during shelling by Ukrainian forces in the city's district.
The online news outlet Mash reported that his car was found with his belongings, including his baseball cap, smashed mobile phone, and a pair of glasses.
Ukrainian forces are suspected of the shelling, and a search for Bentley is ongoing.
A 64-year-old American named Bentley, who is a supporter of Russian-backed forces in Ukraine, was reported by RIA, a Russian state news agency, to have joined pro-Russian fighters in eastern Ukraine in 2014 under the military call-sign "Texas." He later switched from carrying a gun to journalism and worked with Sputnik, another Russian state-owned news agency.
In 2022, Rolling Stone magazine published an interview with Bentley titled "The Bizarre Story of How a Hardcore Texas Leftist Became a Frontline Putin propagandist."
