In a significant development, Ukraine and Russia conducted a prisoner of war swap on Friday.
The exchange saw both countries returning 193 captured personnel each, with the United States and the United Arab Emirates facilitating the process.
This latest move marks a continuation of numerous prisoner swaps that have taken place throughout the ongoing conflict over the past four years.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of these exchanges in a post on Telegram: "It is crucial that our people are returning home".
His chief of staff, Kyrylo Budanov, and Russia's defense ministry also confirmed the assistance provided by the US and UAE in facilitating this exchange.The prisoner swaps have been a recurring feature throughout the conflict.
To date, both Ukraine and Russia have exchanged thousands of captives through such arrangements.
Among those returned to Ukraine were soldiers, border guards, and police officers.
Some of these individuals had faced criminal charges in Russia, while others sustained injuries during their captivity.Upon returning, many Ukrainian captives expressed overwhelming emotion at being home.
