UK and Saudi Arabia Enhance Collaboration in Innovation and Technology
UK Secretary of State Peter Kyle emphasizes the importance of joint efforts in science and technology during a visit to Saudi Arabia.
The United Kingdom is advancing its partnership with Saudi Arabia in the realms of innovation and technology, as articulated by the UK's Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Peter Kyle, during a recent visit to the Kingdom.
This collaboration aims to leverage the complementary strengths of both nations in harnessing the rapid advancements in emerging technologies.
In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Kyle remarked on the promise of continued cooperation, stating that the objective is to facilitate access to potentially transformative innovations that could serve the interests of both countries.
"The UK and Saudi Arabia are natural partners in these areas, with shared ambitions when it comes to both innovation and our strengths in science and technology," he said.
Kyle emphasized that global technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and engineering biology, are set to significantly impact economies and societies.
The UK and Saudi Arabia have also collaborated on initiatives concerning clean energy and hydrogen technologies, following the establishment of a joint energy partnership in January 2022.
This partnership was further reinforced by a December visit to Riyadh by British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, where both nations signed agreements focused on environmentally sustainable advanced materials and hydrogen production.
Kyle noted, "We have made becoming a clean energy superpower one of our key government missions, and the growing demand for clean energy is a massive shared opportunity — for growth, for green jobs, and for enhanced energy security."
He mentioned that strengthening commercial and investment ties between the two countries could drive further research and innovation while building essential skills needed for a transition to net-zero emissions, which would benefit both nations.
During his time in Saudi Arabia, Kyle visited the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center, where he met with medical professionals involved in the first robotic heart transplant performed in January.
He also toured King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, exploring advancements and initiatives in the scientific community.
