Turkiye Dismisses Deputy Education Minister After School Shootings
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed Turkiye's deputy education minister following two school shootings that resulted in nine deaths.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkiye has ordered the dismissal of the country's deputy education minister, Nazif Yilmaz, after a series of school shootings left several individuals dead.
The move was announced through the official gazette late on Friday, addressing concerns over safety and governance within the educational sector.
The recent tragic events involved two separate incidents: one in Kahramanmaras, where eight students aged 10 and 11 along with their teacher were killed by a 14-year-old student.
The attacker, who was reportedly the son of a former police inspector, died at the scene after his actions.
Authorities have since arrested the father.
The second incident occurred in Sanliurfa province when an ex-student opened fire at his old high school before taking his own life during a confrontation with law enforcement.
In response to these events that have sparked public outrage, President Erdogan stated that measures will be taken, including restrictions on gun ownership.
The decree not only removed Yilmaz from his position but also targeted the leadership of other state institutions responsible for education.
This development underlines an urgent call for increased safety and security within Turkiye's educational system, following a series of violent attacks affecting students and educators alike.
