Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has postponed a planned White House meeting with President Joe Biden, scheduled for May 9, due to a change in his schedule.
The White House has not confirmed the May 9 date and no new visit has been announced yet.
A new date for the meeting will be set soon.
An anonymous source revealed that a planned meeting between US President
Joe Biden and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, scheduled for May 9, has been postponed.
The White House never officially announced the visit, but a US official confirmed to Reuters in late March that Ankara had accepted the invitation.
This would have been the first bilateral visit to Washington since Erdogan met with former President
Donald Trump in 2019.
The reason for the postponement is unclear.
Biden and Erdogan have met a few times at international summits and spoken by phone since Biden took office in January 2021.
The relationship between the US and Turkey has been tense due to disagreements on various issues, including Syria, Russia, and the conflict in Gaza.
Despite recent improvement following Turkey's approval of Sweden's NATO membership, tensions remain.
This week, Turkish President Erdogan visited Iraq, and last weekend, he met with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul, marking the first such encounter since Israel launched military operations in Gaza following Hamas' attack in October.
