Survivors of Holocaust and Gaza Conflict March Together in Poland
On Monday, survivors of the October 2024 Hamas attack on Israel and released Gaza hostages participated in the "March of the Living" at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland.
Bella Haim, an 86-year-old survivor, attended the event to honor the victims of the Holocaust and show that Jewish people have rebuilt their country.
Her grandson, Yotam Haim, was captured by Hamas and later killed by Israeli soldiers during a failed escape attempt.
Bella, an Israeli woman, participated in the annual March of the Living in Oswiecim, Poland, representing her grandson and the victims of the former Nazi death camp.
Around 8,000 people attended this year's event, including Jews and non-Jews from around the world.
The camp, built by Nazi Germany after invading Poland, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1.1 million European Jews, 80,000 non-Jewish Poles, 25,000 Roma, and 20,000 Soviet soldiers between 1940 and 1945.
The camp was liberated by the Red Army in January 1945.
This year's march was disrupted briefly by pro-Palestinian protesters who spoke against Israel's actions in Gaza, labeling it a "genocide." The war in Gaza began after Hamas launched an unexpected attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in over 1,170 deaths, mostly civilians, according to Israeli figures.
Hamas also took over 250 hostages, with Israel estimating that around 128 are still in Gaza, and 35 of them have been reported dead.
In response, Israel launched a military offensive against Hamas, resulting in at least 34,735 deaths, primarily women and children, according to Gaza's health ministry.
