Shooting at University of New Mexico Dorm Leaves One Dead and One Injured
Campus-wide search underway for suspect after shooting at Casas del Rio housing center
One person is dead and another wounded following a shooting early Friday at the University of New Mexico's dormitory complex, prompting a campus-wide search for the suspect.
The campus was closed and yellow tape cordoned off a student housing area as authorities conducted a sweep for the suspect.
A shelter-in-place order remained in effect at midday with few people seen on campus hours after the university posted an alert announcing the shooting just before 3:30 a.m. Campus police arrived at the Casas del Rio housing center to find two people with gunshot wounds - one dead and the other with non-life-threatening injuries.
Another alert asking people to shelter in place was sent out on social media just after 6 a.m., stating that multiple law enforcement agencies were on the scene and actively investigating.
Mikey Beck, who was staying in student housing during new student orientation at the university, reported hearing gunshots overnight and witnessing an injured person hiding in bushes.
Two other individuals jumped out of a dorm window and ran, he stated.
Beck expressed concern about starting his freshman year due to the incident and the overall safety concerns in Albuquerque.
The university conducted a 'staged, tactical evacuation,' with buses waiting for students to board.
Details on the victims were not released, nor any description of the suspect.
Casas del Rio is a four-building complex with over 1,000 beds.
The University of New Mexico has approximately 23,000 students and new students have been visiting as part of weekly scheduled orientations ahead of the upcoming fall semester.
Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest city, has faced challenges with violent crime in recent years, particularly among juveniles.
District Attorney Sam Bregman called for legislative action to address the issue, citing other incidents of violence involving young suspects.
