Saudi Arabia's Vision for Future Cities: Designed for Visitors and Residents Alike

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is spearheading the evolution of global travel with a focus on sustainable tourism that caters to both tourists and residents.
Saudi Arabia is stepping forward as a pioneer in tomorrow's travel landscape, prioritizing sustainability as it crafts destinations tailored for future visitors.

According to the country's tourism minister, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, this approach reflects the seismic shifts within the industry brought about by changing traveler habits.

Historically, group travel was prevalent; today, smaller groups and new revenue streams for hotels such as lounges and restaurants are becoming more common.

Younger generations, fueled by technology, now curate their own travel experiences on the go, pressuring traditional travel agencies that once dominated the market with large group excursions.

Al-Khateeb notes the significant growth in China and India's tourism sectors, which presents an opportunity for the Middle East — particularly Saudi Arabia — to become a prime international destination.

The country has seen the fastest tourism growth among G20 nations since 2019, drawing from both domestic and religious travelers and now embracing leisure, business, and holiday visitors across its diverse landscapes.

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia's long-term vision for tourism is one where cities are planned with equal consideration for residents and visitors.

In contrast to the past when cities were primarily built for inhabitants, future urban development in the Kingdom will incorporate amenities and attractions that cater to tourists as well, ensuring cities remain vibrant and relevant.

Sustainability has become a foundational principle of all new developments within the tourism sector.

This commitment is exemplified by adherence to environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards, particularly evident in the construction of new destinations like the Red Sea.

Vision 2030's emphasis on transforming the tourism industry is underscored by this dedication to sustainable development.

In sum, Saudi Arabia's approach to future cities reflects a comprehensive strategy that integrates visitor-centric design with long-term sustainability goals, positioning the nation as a leader in tomorrow's global travel market.
