Saudi Arabia's First Opera, 'Zarqa Al Yamama': A Cultural Milestone with Local and International Talents
The King Fahd Cultural Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, recently premiered the country's first opera, titled "Zarqa Al Yamama," marking a significant cultural achievement.
This major Arab cultural event is being produced by the Theatre and Performing Arts Commission and will feature 10 performances from April 25 to May 4, 2024.
The opera is based on a well-known pre-Islamic Arabian tale about Zarqa Al Yamama, a woman with the extraordinary ability to foresee threats several days in advance.
She uses her gift to protect her tribe from imminent danger.
The production boasts a mix of local and international talents.
Saudi poet Saleh Zamanan wrote the libretto for the opera, while Khairan Al Zahrani, Sawsan Al Bahiti, and Rimaz Aqbi are among the Saudi performers.
The international cast includes renowned artists such as Sarah Connolly, Alexander Stefanovski, and others.
Ivan Fukšević directs the production, and Pablo Gonzalez provides the musical direction.
"Zarqa Al Yamama" not only highlights Saudi Arabia's rich heritage but also showcases its growing arts scene.
The inaugural Saudi opera aims to enhance the country's cultural influence on the international stage.
