Russia Expresses Concern Over Japanese Navy's Participation in Joint Drills With US
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova states that the involvement of the Japanese navy in joint exercises with the US is a cause for concern, increasing tensions.
Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Friday that the participation of the Japanese navy in joint drills with the US is a 'cause for concern' and increases tensions.
The statement came as Philippine and US forces began their annual "Balikatan" exercises, which translate to "shoulder-to-shoulder," running from April 20th to May 8th.
This year marks the first time Japan has actively participated in these drills.
The exercises involve a total of five countries: Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand, and now Japan, making them the largest yet in terms of participating nations.
The inclusion of additional countries escalates the scale and potential strategic implications of the joint military operations.
Russian officials have been vocal about their concerns regarding such international military activities, particularly those involving NATO member countries or allies.
The participation of Japanese forces alongside US and Philippine troops has raised worries about the balance of power in the region and could be seen as a step towards increasing military ties that might affect Russia's interests in the Asia-Pacific area.
