Filipino Conjoined Twins Receive Life-Changing Surgery in Riyadh
Maurice Ann and Klea Misa, a pair of conjoined 7-year-old girls from the Philippines, have been successfully separated through a complex surgery in Saudi Arabia.
Doctors from the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program facilitated the successful separation surgery for Filipino twins Maurice Ann and Klea Misa in Riyadh.
The 7-year-olds, who are from Lubang on the Philippine island of Mindoro, were conjoined at the head.
KSrelief, a Saudi aid agency that established the program in 1990, organized and sponsored the surgery.
Led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, one of the world's top pediatric surgeons, a team of about 30 specialists performed the five-stage operation over several hours.
The procedure was deemed one of the most complex cases globally due to the twins' overlapping brain tissues and Klea's heart and kidney issues.
Maricel Misa, the girls' mother, expressed gratitude towards the skilled medical team for their compassion and the successful outcome.
She mentioned that her family now looks forward to seeing Maurice Ann and Klea 'grow, dream, and live' separate lives.
The surgery marks the 70th successful separation by the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program, with the Misa twins being the third pair from the Philippines to undergo the procedure.
The program has demonstrated its commitment to providing life-changing medical care for conjoined twins globally.
