Philippines Unconcerned About US Deterrence Reduction Due to Iran War, Defense Secretary Says
Manila reaffirms commitment to Mutual Defense Treaty despite potential shift in US strategic focus.
The Philippines remains unperturbed by the prospect of diminished US deterrence capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region as a result of the ongoing Middle East war.
According to Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, who spoke with Reuters on Tuesday, China is likely to attempt to capitalize on any perceived vulnerabilities.
Teodoro stated that recent Chinese actions in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait are unsurprising.
He suggests that Beijing seeks to exploit situations where rival powers appear preoccupied elsewhere.
"It is not surprising," Teodoro said, "that they will take advantage of any opportunity they see, perceived or real".
Despite concerns over potential weakening US strategic presence in Asia due to the Iran war, Teodoro expressed full confidence in the Mutual Defense Treaty between Manila and Washington.
He highlighted ongoing joint military exercises with the US as evidence of unwavering commitment.
"I’m not concerned at all about reduced deterrence," he emphasized.
This stance underscores the Philippines' security partnership with the United States amid geopolitical tensions.
Teodoro's comments also highlight a cautious optimism regarding regional dynamics, emphasizing preparedness rather than concern over potential shifts in global military focus.
