Jamarat Complex Sets Global Benchmark in Hajj Crowd Management

Jamarat Complex Sets Global Benchmark in Hajj Crowd Management

State-of-the-art facility in Makkah boosts safety and efficiency for annual pilgrimage.
MINA, Saudi Arabia: The Jamarat complex stands as a testament to modern engineering and operational excellence within the holy sites of Saudi Arabia.

This significant development project marks a major advancement in crowd management, catering to the highest international standards.

The facility can accommodate more than 300,000 pilgrims per hour during the stoning ritual at the peak of the Days of Tashreeq.

Every year, large crowds gather in Mina to fulfill this ritual, emblematic of obedience and adherence to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

Over the years, the site has undergone extensive transformations from its initial state of small stone pillars in narrow spaces.

Today, it is a fully integrated five-floor complex stretching 950 meters long and 80 meters wide.

It includes 386 escalators across 11 buildings, multi-directional bridges, dedicated entry and exit routes, emergency exits, advanced cooling systems, and sophisticated monitoring technologies.

The complex operates under a meticulous management system supported by specialized teams to ensure safety throughout Hajj.

Kidana Development Company, the project executor under the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, performed comprehensive maintenance and preparatory work to bolster the facility’s infrastructure and operational readiness.

This includes an integrated technological setup featuring 340 escalators, 682 digital surveillance cameras to monitor crowd density, and 228 golf carts for transportation within the area.

Extensive safety preparations involved installing 295 fire boxes, 1,078 fire extinguishers, over 3,350 automatic sprinkler units, and upgrading the operation and maintenance of 456 air-conditioning units.

More than 74,000 lighting units were fitted across all floors to ensure optimal conditions for pilgrims.

The engineering maintenance covered repainting escalator buildings and repairing over 1,216 informational signs for better pedestrian guidance.

Additionally, more than 520 canopies and metal structures were repaired, four main tents on the fourth bridge were maintained, rainwater drainage channels were cleaned, and over 28,000 plastic barriers were installed to manage crowd flow effectively.

The Jamarat complex remains a crown jewel in the holy sites' developments, showcasing Saudi Arabia’s dedication to advanced infrastructure, operational excellence, and secure management of millions of pilgrims during Hajj.
