Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to US President Donald Trump for air defense assistance, emphasizing the urgent need to counter Russia's escalating missile threats.
KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has addressed a letter to US President
Donald Trump and the US Congress, requesting aid in securing Ukraine’s skies from Russian missiles.
Zelensky underscored that ballistic missiles represent Moscow’s 'last major advantage on the battlefield.'
In his correspondence, seen by Reuters, Zelensky stated, "I ask for your help in protecting Ukraine’s skies from Russian missiles".
He proposed acquiring sufficient Patriot systems and interceptor missiles to meet Ukraine's defense needs.
Currently, Ukraine relies on US-made interceptors for the Patriot air defense system to counter Russian ballistic missiles.
The procurement of Patriot missiles has been underway since Trump took office through NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, funded by Ukraine’s European allies.
However, Zelensky expressed concern that the delivery pace under this program no longer suffices given the escalating threats faced.
In his nightly video address, Zelensky highlighted the critical nature of this request, noting it is uncommon for a foreign leader to simultaneously address both the US president and Congress.
He stressed that "America needs to hear Ukraine" in light of the current situation demanding swift and effective action.
Zelensky emphasized that ensuring protection against Russian ballistic missiles is crucial not only for national security but also for successful peace negotiations.
According to him, as long as Russia continues to leverage its missile advantage, genuine diplomatic efforts will be hindered.
Zelensky expressed gratitude for US support thus far and underscored the necessity of addressing this strategic imbalance together with American collaboration.
The letter was first reported by The Kyiv Independent.
On Sunday, Russia launched 30 ballistic missiles against Ukraine, intercepting only 11, according to Ukraine’s air force.
Additionally, two nuclear-capable intermediate-range ballistic Oreshnik missiles were employed during the strike, one of which impacted the Kyiv region and the other reportedly fell in temporarily occupied territory within Ukraine's Donetsk region.
Zelensky outlined Ukraine's resilience against Russia's full-scale aggression, now entering its fifth year, and offered thanks for the US support received thus far.
However, he maintained that so long as President Putin maintains conventional weapon advantages, particularly with ballistic missiles, genuine diplomatic progress will be elusive.
