Israeli Soldier, Captain Daniel Perez, Dies in Hamas Attack; 33rd Hostage Fatality, 1,160 Total Deaths
On Sunday, the Israeli military announced that Captain Daniel Perez, a 22-year-old soldier, died during Hamas's October 7 attack in Gaza.
Perez was one of about 130 captives still being held by Hamas and is the 33rd hostage confirmed dead, including eight soldiers.
Hamas militants seized approximately 250 hostages during the attack, resulting in the deaths of around 1,160 people, mostly civilians.
Perez's family has been notified, and he has been posthumously promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
Two Israeli soldiers, 19-year-old Sergeant Itay Hen and 20-year-old Lieutenant Bar Lev Shaham, are confirmed to have died in Gaza on October 7.
Their deaths were announced five days after the military made the initial report.
At a rally for the return of hostages, the soldiers' fathers called for the unconditional release of all captives.
The Israeli military's campaign against Hamas in Gaza has resulted in at least 31,645 deaths, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Israel is planning to send a delegation to Qatar for truce talks, which may include hostage exchanges and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
