Israeli Police Arrest Suspect in Attack on Nun Near Jerusalem's Old City
Incident marks latest in string of assaults targeting Christians near historic site.
Israeli police have apprehended a 36-year-old man in connection with an assault on a nun that occurred near the Old City in Jerusalem.
The attack took place on Wednesday, outside David’s Tomb, a significant holy site located south of Zion's Gate within the Old City walls.
According to a statement from Israeli authorities, the suspect was arrested following the incident on suspicion of committing a racially motivated crime and remains in custody.
Footage released by police shows the nun with visible injuries, while the attacker is identifiable as wearing tzitzit — a traditional Jewish garment typically worn undergarments by some orthodox men.
Olivier Poquillon, director of the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, identified the nun as a researcher at his institution, describing the attack as an act of sectarian violence in a social media post.
The Old City, annexed by Israel in the East Jerusalem area, contains centuries-old walls enveloping sites central to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
It serves as a focal point for ongoing tensions stemming from competing historical and political claims within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Various religious groups have reported an uptick in harassment and violence targeting Christian pilgrims and clergy, including assaults and spitting incidents often perpetrated by ultra-Orthodox Jewish seminary students.
Wadie Abunassar, coordinating the Holy Land Christian Forum, expressed growing concern over such attacks against Christians and pointed out that swift action was taken due to the attack being captured on video.
Abunassar voiced frustration over a lack of sustained deterrence against such violence, noting common practices where suspects are often released without charges or face lenient indictments.
This arrest has come under scrutiny in light of Israel's treatment toward religious minorities.
Recent restrictions on Muslim and Christian worship during holidays have drawn international criticism.
Furthermore, an incident involving Israeli soldiers damaging a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon also sparked global outrage, with the Israeli government distancing itself from the act and promising disciplinary measures.
The Israeli police have affirmed their commitment to safeguard all communities within the city’s historic sites, ensuring that those responsible for such acts of violence face appropriate consequences.
