MANILA — The death toll from Typhoon Trami, also known locally as Tropical Storm Kristine, has tragically climbed to 81, with thousands affected across the Philippines, local media reported.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, 81 people have lost their lives, while 66 have been injured and 34 remain missing in various regions of the country, as reported by the Manila Times.

The fatalities include 47 in the province of Batangas and 28 in the Bicol region.

As the country grapples with the aftermath of Typhoon Trami, a new tropical storm, dubbed Leon or Pagasa, is also expected to reach the Philippines this weekend, raising concerns of further impacts on affected communities.

Local authorities have reported that approximately 24,988 individuals from regions including Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Caraga have been evacuated to safer locations.

Since Wednesday, Tropical Storm Trami has unleashed heavy rain and strong winds across the Southeast Asian archipelago, prompting a national response.

In a decisive move, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Philippines Armed Forces to mobilize resources for relief operations.

He has also deployed presidential helicopters to assist typhoon victims, while the Philippine National Police, Fire Brigades, and Philippine Coast Guard have been placed on high alert to ensure a coordinated response to the crisis.
