US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has landed in Cairo to advocate for a Gaza ceasefire amidst rising tensions with Hezbollah after recent explosions in Lebanon. Notably, Blinken will engage with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty but skips a visit to Israel during this diplomatic mission. These efforts come amid Israel expanding its military objectives to include engagements with Hezbollah.
Meanwhile, across the Pacific, Japan is gearing up for a pivotal moment in its political landscape with the election of a new prime minister slated for October 1. As the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) readies for a leadership contest on September 27, candidates Sanae Takaichi, Shigeru Ishiba, and Shinjiro Koizumi emerge as frontrunners. In Europe, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas is on a diplomatic tour in Madrid to bolster ties after Spain recognized Palestine as a state in May. On a more economic note, Saudi Arabia's ports have recorded remarkable growth in 2023, with container traffic soaring by 14.6% and ship movements increasing significantly. The General Authority for Statistics reported a total cargo handling of 334 million tonnes, spearheaded by King Fahad Industrial Port in Yanbu for outbound and Jeddah Islamic Port for inbound cargo. Additionally, ship traffic surged by 33.8% to 19,082 ships, coupled with an 11% increase in passenger traffic.
