At Least 21 Killed in Israeli Strikes on Gaza Tent Camp; Tanks Advance into Rafah City Center

At least 21 people, including 12 women, were killed in Israeli strikes on a tent camp in Rafah, Gaza, according to health authorities.
The camp was located in an evacuation area that Israel had advised civilians to move to for safety.

Tanks advanced to the center of Rafah for the first time since heavy bombardment, and at least four tank shells hit the camp.

An Israeli military spokesperson was not aware of the incident.

Witnesses reported tanks and armored vehicles near Al-Awda mosque in central Rafah.

The Israeli military continued to operate in the Rafah area.

A three-week-old Israeli offensive in Rafah, Gaza, has resulted in international outrage after a tent camp in a western district of the city was set on fire on Sunday, killing at least 45 civilians.

Israel claimed the attack was targeting Hamas commanders, but global leaders expressed horror as the incident occurred in a designated "humanitarian zone" where civilians had sought shelter.

Spain, Ireland, and Norway planned to recognize a Palestinian state on Tuesday as a diplomatic move to curb the violence.

Three countries expressed hope that their decision would speed up negotiations for a ceasefire in Israel's eight-month-long conflict with Hamas militants.

Residents of Rafah reported continued bombing in the Tel Al-Sultan neighborhood, resulting in the displacement of over one million people since May, according to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

Families were seen fleeing with their belongings through the destroyed streets.

Moayad Fusaifas, a resident of Rafah, described the ongoing violence and chaos in the city as Israeli forces continued their incursion.

After seizing control of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt three weeks ago, Israeli tanks had been advancing towards western neighborhoods and had taken up positions on the Zurub hilltop.

Witnesses reported gunbattles between Israeli troops and Hamas-led fighters in the area.

The Israeli military had brought in remote-operated armored vehicles but had not yet been seen in person.

An Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment.

The Israeli military conducted operations in the Philadelphi Corridor between Gaza and Egypt based on intelligence about terror targets.

Troops engaged in combat, located tunnel shafts, weapons, and militant infrastructure.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to stop military actions due to the risk of civilian casualties, but Israel argues it has some leeway.

The ICJ also called for the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Over 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's offensive, which began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israeli communities in October.

In Rafah, Gaza, intense clashes between Israeli forces and Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters resulted in approximately 7 deaths and over 1,200 casualties, along with the seizure of over 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports.

The primary objective is to eliminate Hamas fighters and rescue hostages allegedly held in the area.

In Jabalia, a large refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, Israeli forces have been engaged in fierce fighting with militants.

After Israeli forces withdrew from certain residential districts, civil emergency teams reported discovering bodies in the wreckage.
