Hundreds Flee India's Migrant Crackdown Towards Bangladesh

India has ordered the construction of detention centers for undocumented Bangladeshi migrants and Rohingya refugees, leading to hundreds fleeing to the border.
New Delhi: Hundreds of people in India’s border region with Bangladesh have fled towards the frontier, according to police statements on Wednesday.

This exodus follows a government directive issued for constructing detention centers aimed at housing undocumented Bangladeshi migrants and Rohingya refugees.

The order came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gained power in West Bengal state in early May with a policy that emphasizes detecting, deleting, and deporting unauthorized immigrants.

The BJP has long argued that such migration poses a national security threat, especially in border states where demographic shifts are being observed.

West Bengal's government mandated the establishment of 'holding centers' for apprehended foreigners last week, targeting both Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingya individuals.

This decision has heightened tensions among West Bengal’s approximately 35 million Muslims who share linguistic and cultural affinities with Bangladesh.

At Swarupnagar Police Station, situated about 10 kilometers from the Bangladesh border, police officer Shirshendu Pati reported that streams of people have arrived since Tuesday.

According to Pati, approximately 200 individuals sought refuge on Tuesday, followed by around 40 more early Wednesday.

These individuals are currently being held at a verification center while their identities and paperwork are processed.

Once verified, they will be handed over to India’s border security force for deportation.

The Home Minister, Amit Shah, also announced the formation of a special committee on demographic change, citing it as a significant challenge for any country's present and future.

He highlighted that issues like undocumented migration and other factors contributing to unnatural demographic changes are integral to national sovereignty, security, law and order, and profound social structures.

Critics argue that the BJP’s rhetoric and policies contribute to the unease and marginalization of India's estimated 200 million Muslims, alleging a conflation of religious identity with unlawful immigration status.

The decision to establish centers in West Bengal has raised particular concerns due to its porous border with Bangladesh and long history of migration.

The situation is further complicated by strained relations between India and Bangladesh following the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Dhaka in 2024, an ally whose departure led to a shift in political dynamics.

Additionally, the inclusion of Rohingya refugees—a predominantly Muslim group fleeing Myanmar's brutal military crackdown in 2017—in these detention orders has drawn widespread criticism.
