Greece's ex-PM Tsipras launches new party in shifting political landscape

Greece's ex-PM Tsipras launches new party in shifting political landscape

Former leftist prime minister Alexis Tsipras enters the fray with his Greek Left Alliance, aiming to challenge the ruling conservatives.
In a move that marks the re-entry of Greece’s political stage by former leftist prime minister Alexis Tsipras, a new party has emerged amidst a landscape fragmented by scandals and economic discontent.

The Greek Left Alliance (ELAS), founded by Tsipras, is set to contest the conservative government led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who has been in power for seven years.

In his return speech in Athens, Tsipras, 51, emphasized the need to combat 'authoritarianism and corruption' prevalent under the current administration.

He argued that Greece requires a 'shock of integrity and democracy,' reflecting dissatisfaction among citizens concerning the rule of law and government accountability.

This stance is rooted in Tsipras’s own historical clash with international creditors when he served as prime minister, promising to eliminate austerity measures but ultimately reaching a compromise that led to Greece exiting its financial crisis in 2018.

Tsipras's reentry into politics comes after stepping down from Syriza leadership and resigning from parliament in October 2023.

His new party aims to unite social democrats, radical leftists, and greens, potentially capturing up to 18% of the vote share, as indicated by recent polls.

The formation of ELAS is expected to challenge Mitsotakis's New Democracy Party, which currently holds a commanding lead in opinion polls.

The political climate in Greece has been further complicated by allegations of scandals, including a farm subsidy scandal investigated by the EU and a wiretapping scandal that targeted opposition figures, including socialist leader Nikos Androulakis.

Public discontent over these issues, coupled with the handling of the 2023 train disaster (which took three years to reach trial following 57 fatalities), has contributed to erosion of support for Mitsotakis’s government.

Scheduled elections in 2027 may be brought forward due to speculation and widespread disillusionment with the political status quo.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis remains the frontrunner, but emerging parties, including one by former conservative PM Antonis Samaras and Maria Karystianou (who lost her daughter in the train tragedy), indicate a diverse and competitive political landscape.

Mitsotakis views the new party formations as repetitive of old ideological patterns and indicative of a 'political Babel' focused on criticizing his government rather than offering coherent alternatives.
