US President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment in Russian leader Vladimir Putin for failing to strike a peace deal with Ukraine, despite recent escalations of attacks on Kyiv.
US President
Donald Trump stated that he is 'very disappointed' by Russian leader Vladimir Putin's inability to secure a peace deal with Ukraine.
This statement comes after Russia has intensified its attacks on Kyiv, following the failed bilateral talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky since their meeting in Alaska last month.Trump emphasized his disappointment during an interview on the Scott Jennings radio show, acknowledging the once-positive relationship he shared with Putin but remained unclear about potential consequences for Moscow.
He did not specify any specific actions that might be taken against Russia, despite previously setting a two-week deadline for a peace agreement which is now due to expire later this week.Trump's response to Putin's actions has been vague, sometimes threatening sanctions while at other times suggesting he may allow the conflict between Ukraine and Russia to continue.
He mentioned that he would 'do something to help people live,' without providing further details.
In a later Oval Office conversation, Trump hinted about consequences if Putin and Zelensky fail to meet to end the ongoing war initiated by Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.Furthermore, Trump expressed no concern over the potential alliance between Russia and China, despite recent meetings between Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which resulted in a statement that their countries' ties were at an 'unprecedented level.' North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has deployed troops to fight alongside Russia in Ukraine, was also present. The US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Monday that the administration would examine options for potential sanctions against Russia this week.
According to Bessent, Putin has not been fulfilling his previous commitments made during discussions with Trump and instead escalated bombing campaigns against Kyiv.
Consequently, President Trump is now considering all available options in response to these developments.
