Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain to Persist Across Saudi Arabia
The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) warns of ongoing thunderstorms, flash floods, hail, and sandstorms across several regions.
Riyadh: The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) issued a warning on Friday regarding the continuation of moderate to heavy thunderstorms throughout much of Saudi Arabia.
These storms pose a significant threat due to potential flash floods, hail, and sandstorms within the Kingdom. The meteorological agency forecasts that various regions will be affected by this unstable weather.
The Eastern Province, Northern Borders, Al-Jouf, Hail, Al-Qassim, and Riyadh are expected to experience the most impactful conditions.
Additionally, heightened risks have been identified for western and southern highlands, encompassing areas such as Madinah, Makkah, Al-Baha, Asir, and Jazan.Forecasters predict light to moderate storms in Tabuk and Najran, with night and early morning fog likely to reduce visibility across multiple locations.
The General Directorate of Civil Defense has advised the public to avoid valleys and flood-prone areas due to their potential for sudden transformation into dangerous waterways.
Authorities recommend that residents monitor official weather apps and follow safety protocols. This ongoing instability is part of an unusually severe spring weather pattern, characterized by rainfall levels exceeding 160% above average in some provinces.
Meteorologists attribute the intensity of this system to a powerful jet stream transporting deep tropical moisture from the Indian Ocean into the Arabian Peninsula. The NCM has noted that the current rain system, which began on April 20, has already triggered localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Visibility issues have been particularly challenging in Riyadh and parts of the Eastern Province due to wind-blown sand preceding the heavy downpours.
