Three Men Arrested over Deaths of Five Migrants in Channel Crossing; Criminal Gang Investigation Following Tragic Incident
On Wednesday, British police announced the arrest of three men in connection to the deaths of five migrants, including a child, who drowned while attempting to cross the English Channel from France the previous day.
The incident occurred when an overcrowded boat carrying 112 people set sail in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, causing panic among the passengers.
Rescue teams saved around 50 people, but some remained on the boat, determined to reach the UK.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) detained two Sudanese nationals aged 22 and 19, and a South Sudanese national aged 22, on Tuesday night on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration and entering the UK illegally.
A tragic boat crossing incident highlights the danger posed by such crossings and the importance of targeting the criminal gangs involved, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA) in the UK.
The NCA will work with French authorities to gather evidence, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice.
French police are also investigating the incident alongside the NCA.
Fifty-five people believed to have been on the boat that reached the UK have been identified.
Over 6,000 people have crossed the English Channel to Britain this year in small, risky boats.
A tragic crossing occurred shortly after the British parliament passed a bill allowing for the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda, which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak believes will deter such journeys.
