Dr. Sara Philby: Honoring Her Grandfather's Exploration Legacy Through Medical Education and Embryology

Dr. Sara Faris Abdullah Philby, the granddaughter of famous explorer Abdullah Philby, chose to study medicine in Saudi Arabia, reflecting her family's pioneering spirit.
Abdullah Philby's multifaceted contributions, including historic Arabian Peninsula explorations and conversion to Islam, continue to inspire.

Sara expressed deep admiration for her grandfather, whose image brings her warmth and optimism due to his unique, dedicated, and punctual traits.

A picture of him praying under an acacia tree was provided.

Harry St. John Bridger Philby was a renowned explorer and Arabist.

He attended Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, before joining the Indian Civil Service where he mastered several languages including Urdu, Punjabi, Baluchi, Persian, and Arabic.

In 1915, he was recruited to Basra in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) by Percy Cox.

His service in Baghdad and Basra led to a mission to meet Ibn Saud in Riyadh, for which he was awarded the Royal Geographical Society Founders Medal.

Philby is known for his extraordinary journeys, most notably his crossing of the Empty Quarter in 1932, a feat that tested the limits of endurance.

Over three decades, Philby left behind a legacy as one of the greatest Arabian explorers.

Dr. Sara Philby, granddaughter of renowned explorer Bill Philby, earned her degrees in medicine and surgery from Alfaisal University in Riyadh.

Captivated by embryology, she formed a 36-year friendship with Ibn Saud.

Philby, an explorer at heart, embarked on numerous expeditions, including crossing the Empty Quarter in 1932.

He documented his journeys meticulously, recording data such as place names, temperatures, and compass bearings.

Philby's scholarly contributions earned him recognition from academic societies worldwide.

Dr. Sara Faris Abdullah Philby, an Alfaisal University graduate, spoke to Arab News about the life and legacy of her famous forebear, Sir Harry St. John Philby.

Philby was a renowned Arabian explorer known for his detailed maps, books, and contributions to history, politics, and wildlife.

He was a trusted advisor to Ibn Saud, and their bond was strengthened by Philby's conversion to Islam in 1930.

Philby was bestowed the name Sheikh Abdullah.

In 1960, at the age of 75, Philby died in Beirut and was buried in the Muslim graveyard at El-Bouchara.

His grave is marked with a inscription highlighting his significant impact on exploration and scholarship.

Some of Philby's specimens are housed in the British Museum in London.

Dr. Sara Faris Abdullah, an Alfaisal University graduate, deeply values her grandfather's legacy.

He lived an extraordinary life, contributing significantly to Arabia during World War I, forming a close relationship with Ibn Saud, and playing a crucial role in the Arab Revolt and the establishment of Saudi Arabia.

Sara's grandfather's influence on the region's history and culture continues to inspire her.

Although her academic interests differ from her grandfather's in exploration and travel, his impact on her educational choices remains substantial.

Sara, inspired by her late father's legacy, is motivated to continually pursue new challenges and growth in her education.

Though her academic pathway is in medicine, her father's love for history, the desert, maps, and wildlife has left a lasting impact on her heart.

Sara earned degrees in medicine and surgery from Alfaisal University in Riyadh, but her fascination with embryology led her to this field due to its potential to address infertility and help couples start families according to her religious beliefs.

Sara, a Muslim with a strong faith, finds compassion and kindness essential in her academic pursuits.

Her interest in human embryonic development was deepened by the Qur'an's references to embryology.

This conviction led her to specialize in clinical embryology and reproductive biology at Alfaisal University, where she graduated with first honors this year.

Sara expresses gratitude for her time at Alfaisal University and hopes for its continued success.

Sara's academic journey was filled with challenges that tested her commitment and patience.

However, these experiences helped her develop resilience and determination.

She encourages aspiring professionals to embrace the journey, stay true to themselves, and remain dedicated to their goals.

Balancing personal aspirations with her family's legacy is important to Sara.

She strives to align her goals with her family's expectations while staying true to herself and honoring their heritage.

Throughout her academic journey, Sara remains committed to honoring the legacy passed down to her by her grandfather.

Sara expressed that honoring her grandfather's legacy is not just an objective for her, but a deeply meaningful and driving force in her life.
